The expansion will feature infantry, vehicles, and buildings from the Tiberian Sun era, and players would have been able to seamlessly swap between Renegade X and Firestorm maps via end of round map voting. On 20 June 2020, a new expansion game mode titled Renegade X: Firestorm was announced. The multiplayer version was first released on 26 February 2014 as an open beta, with Black Dawn missions excluded.

On 28 January 2012, Totem Arts released a demo called Renegade X: Black Dawn, a short standalone singleplayer game. As a result, the 0.55 beta is still available from the site, but no longer supported or patched by the development team. After the 0.55 beta, the mod is no longer being developed as a modification for UT3, but as a free standalone game using Unreal Development Kit (UDK). The mod was publicly released on 30 September 2009 and received multiple awards. The project was originally titled Renegade 2007. Totem Arts was formed by Bilal Haj-Bakri (Fobby) and Waqas Iqbal (Havoc89) as a volunteer team in 2006 with the aim of remaking Renegade as a total conversion mod for Unreal Tournament 3.

McFarland would later be added as a GDI anti-personnel infantry in the Renegade X standalone multiplayer. The campaign features an original character, Captain Angus McFarland, who is a heavy weapons expert hailing from Scotland and is close friends with Gunner and Havoc. The player takes control of Havoc, who spearheads the GDI assault along with members of the Dead 6, blasts through waves of Nod forces, and rescues the missing scientists. GDI discovers the base and mounts a rescue operation, codenamed "Operation: Black Dawn". The two were taken to a Nod-fortified island in the Black Sea in an effort to revitalize Project ReGenesis. Mobius and his daughter Sydney were once again kidnapped by the Black Hand. The campaign takes place shortly after the events of the original Renegade. Renegade X: Black Dawn is a single-player minicampaign released on Januto showcase the game as it was developed with the Unreal Development Kit.

The commander can also accumulate "Commander Points" to be able to call in support powers on the battlefield. The commander is given control of the team's harvester and has the ability to place waypoints and mark targets to focus on. One major feature added to the C&C mode is the commander role, in which a player is assigned to be the team's commander. Renegade X features multiple game modes, the most popular of which is the "Command & Conquer" mode. It boasts 64-player servers spread across two unique factions, the Global Defense Initiative and the Brotherhood of Nod, each with a different roster containing dozens of infantry classes with unique equipment and vehicles. As in the original Renegade, Renegade X is a tactical shooter with real-time strategy elements.
